We will be celebrating the Centenary of the old Lake Perkolilli motor circuit near Kalgoorlie in October 2014.
The first racing started at the claypan in 1914 and continued right through to World War II. They even erected a grandstand on the lake to cope with the crowds. Some low key racing happened after the war, but nothing like the pre-war years. Lake Perkolilli has always been a legendary part of our Western Australian motoring history and we think that it is appropriate to celebrate our own history.
Our plan is to have pre-war cars and motorcycles on the claypan just like the good old days. The cars which competed at Perkolilli were not just racing cars – vintage sedans and tourers, even taxis raced. The event coincides with the National Veteran Car Rally hosted by Kalgoorlie/Boulder which will attract about 100 veteran cars.
I am also producing a book on the first 100 years of racing at Lake Perkolilli and I am chasing photographs are profiles of drivers and cars who participated. So if you have any old photographs which I could use for the book, then please ask them to contact me.
We now have set the date for the Lake Perkolilli Centenary of Speed 1914-2014. The event will be held from 16 to 19 October 2014, prior to the National Veteran Rally.
